Petőfi Square

Named after the famous Hungarian poet, Sandor Petofi.  He not only played a very important in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49 but also wrote a poem called National Song about the deep feelings of the Hungarian people in their desire for independence from the Habsburg Monarchy. This poem was set to music and is sung every year on March 15th, National Hungarian Day.  On that day also, a wreath is laid at his statue in the square.

The Danube promenade ends at Petofi Square.  It used to be a social entertainment to promenade along there, chatting to friends - and perhaps strangers - and sometimes stopping at a cafe terrace to listen to some jazz or gipsy music.

This is the closest stop to our boat station.
