New York Palace

Yet another hotel built by a foreign company - this time the New York Life Insurance company.  When it first opened its doors in 1894, the building had three floors of very fancy office space and the entire ground floor was rented out as a public coffee house - the New York Cafe.  Furnished and decorated in an eclectic mixture of styles, the cafe quickly became home to the writers, poets, film-makers and intellectuals of Budapest.  For many years, all the literary life of the city could be found there - including the very young Alexander Korda.  However, it was damaged during World War 2 and the cafe didn’t recover its fading style - or its Bohemian atmosphere after that.  The building was treated badly and it wasn’t until after the end of the Communist era that it was finally restored to its former glory.

In 2007, after 5 years of very expensive rebuilding and renovations, the building opened again as a luxurious 5 star hotel, the Boscolo New York Palace.  Once again the cafe is open for business so you can go in for coffee and admire the opulent Baroque style of what was once known as “the most beautiful cafe in the world.”
