Karoly Boulevard 23- The Orczy House

The Orczy House, built in the mid 18th century by the wealthy Orczy family, was for many years the centre of the Jewish quarter in Budapest.  The house was actually a large two-storeyed structure that was more like a complex, having its different areas linked by passageways and with many internal courtyards.  At times it was the largest building in Pest.  Within its walls some 100 businesses flourished, including what was the largest grain store in Europe, and over the years the first Synagogue was built, as was the first Jewish school and ritual bath-house.  Known as the Judenhof, it remained a vital part of Jewish life and business in the city until its demolition in 1936.  That part of the street now is just made up of unremarkable apartment blocks.
