Heroes' Square

Heroes' Square lies at the northern end of Andrassy Avenue and is also part of the World Heritage site.  The central landmark in the middle, the tall column with the Archangel Gabriel on top, is the Millennium Memorial, built in 1896 to commemorate the arrival of the Magyar tribes and the foundation of Hungary a thousand years before.  A virtual statue of Michael Jackson replaced Gabriel in his "History" video.

In the colonnades behind the monument are the statues of the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and some of Hungary's most important statesmen. In front is a large stone

cenotaph dedicated "to the memory of the people who gave their lives for the freedom of our people and our national independence."

The square is flanked by two important buildings: on the right is the Museum of Fine Arts and on the left the Palace of Art.

Behind the square is the huge City Park Ice Rink, renovated in 2014.  In summer months the area is used for boating and in winter it is much used by skaters.  Directly behind this area is the stunningly beautiful Dracula's Castle - definitely worth seeing.

From Heroes' Square it is an easy 10 minute walk to Budapest Zoo.
